Topology of Tone

Life in music lies in the motions which interlink the tones in flowing lines. These lines, or their representative topology, are the only tangible element in the art of tone. Topology is a system of harmoniously associating individually perfect, but independent, melodies. These melodies interact with one another to create a topological representation of an advanced state of inner nature, forming new complexes and motives, new stimuli. The simplest imitation of nature is based on shape grammar, a complex manifold of combinations and re-combinations, and if it is understandably difficult to identify the external pattern, then insurmountable difficulties lie in the way of analysis if the impression on the observing pattern is now taken as the point of departure for what was registered by the ear. The beauty of interpreting the topology comes from using a shape grammar to compose music that appears highly complex to the ear, yet transpires to be highly simple to the mind; a topological isomorphism. The listener’s pleasure is influenced by the extent to which the auditory data can be resolved in the simplest terms possible.
